Understanding
Understanding must be measured by a group of criteria rather than any single measure. (Me: Integrated measures of understanding develop when individuals construct their own knowledge and understanding through a process of discovery. The measure of understanding must match the form in which the understanding was developed- same epistimological perspective.) "Understanding is a matter of degree" (wiggins, 45): A small child would understand that a mouse is an animal but may not understand that a bug is also an animal. An older child will understand that both are animals but that they are in different groups (vertebrate/invertebrate). An even older child would understand that a mouse is a mammal which is a category of animal.
