1. Sensorimotor (1st Stage) 0-2 years
    1. Goal directed activity (reflexes/actions intentional)
    2. Deferred imitation (reproducing actions at a later time)
    3. Object permanence (i.e. objects hidden from view exist)
  2. Pre-Operational (2nd Stage) 2-7 years
    1. Rapid growth in vocabulary
      1. Centration - children's inability to identify or consider all aspects of visual displays
    2. Symbol/language systems
      1. Egocentrism - children use egocentric language and behaviour which is focussed around the individual child and are unable in this stage of development to see different view points or put themselves in the shoes of another person.
  3. Concrete Operational (3rd Stage) 7-12 years
    1. Logical thought and reasoning (i.e. ability to look beyond appearance)
    2. Ability to consider reversability
    3. Conservation
  4. Formal Operational (4th Stage) 12-15 years
    1. Ability to think abstractly and logically about propositions
    2. Consider own identity and social relationships and interactions
    3. Develop hypothesis to arrive at correct conclusion
  5. Disequilibrium
    1. Occurs when children experience a new event, disequilibrium occurs until the child is able to assimilate or accommodate new event to reach Equilibration
  6. Equilibration (combines Assimilation and Accommodation)
    1. When Assimilation and Accommodation balance each other
  7. Accommodation (new knowledge)
    1. Works in conjunction with Assimilation (can't have one without the other). Process which allows children to modify schemes and structures to accommodate new information
  8. Assimilation (previous knowledge)
    1. Children take information from environment and modify existing structures to fit new information
  9. Structuralism - mental structures that change through experience
  10. Constructivism - children shape own meaning from experience, no external assistance
